MOMENTS IN TIME
Ichose MSU because of my great grandmother, who often spoke of my great uncle who played QB at MSU and how great the institution was. It was also the fact at the time it was a 125 years old with a history of greatness and legacy that was second to none. The School of Business had the same accreditations as the flagship universities in Virginia and Maryland. I could feel the history as I walked the campus which was filled with historical buildings and landmarks. I could also feel the presence of the many great alumni who came before me as I sat in classrooms. The professors knew you by name and made themselves available; they were supportive and demanded students to strive for excellence. MSU helped me to understand the importance of giving back and helping those who looked like me who could perhaps use a hand to lift them up. In 1998, I co-founded Colt Express Transportation in Hartford, Connecticut. I was able to mentor and employ a vast array of individuals from an Ivy Leaguer to heads of households and more importantly the many young men of color who were often overlooked for opportunities. Many of those young men went on to successful careers and a few graduated college themselves. One of my proudest moments being simple yet unforgettable was my grandmother coming to visit me in Connecticut from Virginia. While driving through Hartford, several people screaming out my name, first her dispelling it, but then her asking me 'Are they calling your name?' I explained to her yes and how I employed so many young men they knew me. I'll never forget the look in her eyes and how proud she was at that moment. I was twice recognized for my dedication and commitment to the transportation industry being listed in the Metropolitan and National Register's 'Who's Who in Executives and Professionals.' I have no regrets in my decision to attend MSU; in fact it was my best decision. MSU has always loved me and I will forever love her until the day I die. Originally published by the |
